Visited today Saturday 14th January, booked through Eventbrite, run by volunteers who are extremely welcoming & friendly, knowledgeable about the history so please ask questions. About 4 miles of tunnels but only part is available for a tour, bats live in other areas. Built in 1941 as a safe place to build parts for aircraft. In the 60s modifications made to turn it into a nuclear bunker during the cold war. Great place to explore, good value for money, guided tour lasts an hour. Recommended. Sadly no photos allowed inside.
This is well worth a visit. It seems to be run on a shoe string so any visit will help fund the project. Its not expensive but don't take children, it's not suitable. The heart has been ripped out of it so pay attention to you guide to get the most out of your visit. Guide was helpful and interesting. Make sure you wear sensible clothes and shoes. I'd recommend it as very good value.
Me and my mum went on a ghost hunt here, it's fab inside, just remember to wear a hoodie (or a coat in winter) it's bloody freezing inside! Also take a torch, you can't see your hand touching your nose it's that dark too! 3 or so miles worth of tunnels to explore if you get the chance to go in there! It's incredible!
The cost is a little steep for what it is, however it is an interesting insight into provisions that were made during WWII and the cold war. The guides are knowledgeable and all volunteers so hats off to them, but you can feel that it's not that professional, they do what they can with what they have, most areas are similar and it will be nice if they can recreate and restore some of it to look something like it would have when it was operational. At the moment it's more of a series are similar looking tunnels and some interesting history.
Good tours and interesting Place if your interested in WWII Shadow-factory history ,be sure to book through their Facebook page.
Most of the historical items have been removed but they are starting to put a museum together.
It has been four years since my last visit, WOW! What a transformation. They have worked so hard making a go of this place. If you get chance to go, please do, wwll worth a look. Jo was our guide, she is fab. Mike and Russ are very welcoming 🥰 …
Very interesting tour, tunnels were used during the war then during the cold War. Limited on what they can do as power comes from generators and without a mains supply it would be to expensive to install de-humidifiers. Any equipment on show is susceptible to mold and rust.
